Born and raised in Melbourne, Jewellery Designer and mum-to-be, Olivia Cummings, is the Founder of Cleopatra's Bling. She lived in Berlin, Paris, Istanbul and Napoli from the age of 16 and returned to Melbourne in 2019. It was in Europe and Turkey that her love and curiosity of handmade traditions bloomed.
She talks to us at M. Magazine about how she learnt her jewellery making skills in the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul, how jewellery has added to her pregnancy style, and her favourite pregnancy products.
Congratulations on your pregnancy! How are you feeling?
Thank you! I feel good and healthy and empowered in my body, I am 35 weeks along now and very excited to be meeting our future son or daughter.
Your Jewellery company Cleopatra's Bling - how did this begin, and where did you acquire your jewellery skills?
I moved from Paris to Istanbul when I was 23 to learn how to make jewellery with the traditional jewellers in the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul. I lived there for 5 years where I learnt Turkish, which allowed me to get deep in the community there and learn what I needed to start the brand. I am still learning and acquiring knowledge, and feel so incredibly lucky to follow this dream of mine.
Wearing jewellery is sentimental, empowering, emotional.
What do your pieces provide for those who wear them?
Cleopatra's Bling is all about drawing inspiration from the rich cultural heritage and timeless beauty of the Mediterranean and Middle East, as well as the lush landscapes of my Australian home. Every piece of ethical jewellery we create is handcrafted with passion and care, turning each one into a little work of art infused with ancient symbolism. From glimmering gold and silver to precious stones, intricate beading, and enamel, every detail is designed to be a feast for the senses. Our talented artisans, from Turkey to Italy to India, bring my designs to life, blending cultural traditions with a modern twist.
Pregnancy and running your business.
How have you shifted into this new dynamic?
Balancing pregnancy with running the business has definitely been a challenge, especially during the first and second trimesters when I felt more tired than usual. Pregnancy and running a business are almost complete opposites in many ways, and it’s been difficult to strike that balance. I found it hard to switch off at night because my mind was constantly racing with things I needed to organise before going on maternity leave. It’s been a learning process to adapt to this new dynamic, but I’m gradually finding ways to manage both roles more effectively.
How have you found your style during your pregnancy?
Thanks to my extensive jewellery collection, I've been able to rely heavily on accessories to feel stylish and adorned as my body has changed. Since I didn't want to invest in a lot of maternity clothes that I wouldn't wear after pregnancy, I focused on finding a few key pieces, like pants that would see me through the entire pregnancy. Being pregnant during winter also made it easier to get creative with layering—I'd mix and match T-shirts and jumpers, then add plenty of jewellery to elevate the look. This approach allowed me to maintain a sense of personal style without having to overhaul my wardrobe.
Jewellery can be passed down from generation to generation.
Do you have any special family heirloom pieces that bring back memories / connections?
Before my dad passed away last year after a long battle with leaukemia, we collaborated on a special ring for my mother. This ring became a deeply meaningful project for both of us, as it was his way of expressing his love and leaving behind something tangible that would connect us all. The process of designing the ring together allowed us to bond over our shared appreciation for craftsmanship and beauty, and it’s a piece that now carries an incredible amount of emotional significance for me. Every time I see it, I'm reminded of his strength, love, and the special moments we shared during that challenging time. This ring has become a treasured family heirloom, symbolising the enduring connection between us and the love we continue to hold for him. You can see the details of this cherished piece here
What are you looking forward to the most for when your baby arrives?
I'm really looking forward to experiencing the new dynamic that comes with having a little one in our lives. I can't wait to see how this tiny human will change our family and bring us all even closer. There’s also something incredibly special about the idea of introducing my baby to the world and sharing all the things I love with them, from my passion for creativity to the simple joys of everyday life. I'm excited for the little moments—those first smiles, the cuddles, and the discovery of their unique personality. Of course, I know it’s going to be a big adjustment, but I’m ready to embrace every challenge and joy that comes our way.
Anything you have learnt about postpartum/ birth that you never knew about!?
One of the things I’ve learned about postpartum that I didn’t fully realise before is just how important it is to give yourself grace and time to recover.
There’s so much focus on the birth itself, but the postpartum period is its own unique journey with its challenges and adjustments. I’ve come to understand the importance of rest, self-care, and not rushing the healing process—both physically and emotionally. I’ve also learned a lot about the support systems that are essential during this time, from leaning on loved ones to seeking out resources that can help navigate the early days of motherhood.
Any exciting creations in the works for Cleopatra's Bling?
2025 is almost all prepared which is very exciting, because it opens up space for me to create more pieces for 2026 but also it means I can take the pressure off for post-partum. There are many very special pieces coming out from now until the end of 2025 and I can't wait to share them with the world.
I am sure a baby collection will be on the cards, too....
You're favourite pregnancy products?
Skincare! Products that keep my skin hydrated and soothed have been a real treat, especially as my body goes through so many changes. Overall, I’ve found that focusing on comfort and a little bit of pampering has helped me feel my best during this time. I have loved all the belly butters, oils, and have been soaking in magnesium a lot in the morning and night.
I've loved Willow by the Sea and Pure Mama.
The Mumma Milla bras have been a life-saver too as I don't usually wear bras and yours are so comfortable. Your bralettes have been a game-changer for me during pregnancy!
They’re not only incredibly comfortable but also offer just the right amount of support without feeling restrictive. I love how soft and breathable the fabric is—it makes them perfect for everyday wear, especially when my body feels more sensitive.
The designs are so stylish, too, which is a bonus because they make me feel put together even on the more challenging days.
I’m really glad I discovered them!
